It's early Thursday morning and reports are out that both Miami and Virginia Tech have accepted the ACC offer to join the league. (more discussion below).
But the lead story in Wednesday's newsstand is the disappearance of Baylor's Patrick Dennehy. Hope this isn't a new trend. Last year it was former NBA player Bison Dele who disappeared and unfortunately was not to be found alive.
A member of a Duquesne Advisory Board is named the president of the Community College of Allegheny County. A Pgh. writer suggests Pittsburgh's next move is an NBA team while the Pens new arena is tied to revenue from a proposed race track in Allegheny County. To repeat, a new Pens' building (as hockey folks call it) could have positive repercussions for Duquesne and Pittsburgh basketball in general.
Pittsburgh, which reportedly has the most bridges of any metropolitan area in the U.S.A., has a problem there. A report states that one-third in a very poor shape.
In Atlantic 10 basketball news, senior Brian Woodward will be returning for a post-grad season as he graduated this May and therefore gets the year back he lost under the NCAA's Proposition 16/48 rule. UMass is getting hit from two directions: from those who want to see the president at Amherst resign and the athletic department budget loss is increased to $2.55 million while the school still appears to be pursuing Diva. I-A football.
Bob Cousy is starting a Basketball Hall of Fame award for the top college point guard. The first award we be announced at next year's NCAA Final Four. A Northern Ireland group is using basketball as a way to lessen tension and bring folks together. A Division III conference is also look at some re-structuring but like a photo negative of the ACC's move.
This may be the last time boxing will be mentioned in these narratives. Vitali Klitschko had 60 stitches for the cut after last Saturday's fight with Lennox Lewis. The stitches are out and doctors report if the Doctor (he has a Ph.D.. in ) avoids contact for 60 days he could get back to fighting after another 30 days. The before and after photos of the Ukrainian boxer are shown below. (The after is less upsetting than other pictures I've seen.)
Now back to the ACC. Miami, whish stated it was hesitant about the offer after Syracuse and BC were not included in the invite, is OK now. Those stories top the section. Next are the official statements from the affected schools; then some timelines; reports on the ACC's offer; columnists columns; and, finally impact on other conferences, starting with the Big East. Louisville appears to be a football+ school that will join and one of three others are in the running. The Big East could stop there or go through with building the 16-team conference by adding two basketball schools, with Xavier and Marquette heading that list.
